As warm weather rolls in across Georgia, people everywhere are making plans to travel for their Spring Break vacations. With an anticipated influx of traffic on interstates and surface streets, it is wise for travelers everywhere to review some safe driving tips, especially regarding warmer weather.
When planning any road trip, it is important to outline your route and check local traffic laws when traveling through unfamiliar areas. Similarly, though you may be familiar with the traffic laws and routes of an area, other travelers may not be, so it is important to stay vigilant regardless of where you are driving.
Additionally, many people travel to warmer areas at this time of year. An increase in temperature can have an effect on vehicles. Be sure to check your tire pressure (pressures go up as tires warm) and tread and replace your tires, whenever necessary. Also check your vehicle’s cooling system, fluid levels, windshield wipers, battery, and lights to avoid running into car maintenance issues in an unfamiliar area where roadside assistance may be far.
At this time of year, another matter to be vigilant about is impaired driving. Alcohol and other substance consumption can be more common with people on vacations and summer holidays. Remember, never drive unless you are completely sober.
Finally, especially if traveling with children, keep plenty of water and snacks in the car—and never leave any person or animal in the car, even with the windows open. Remember, a child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s.
Road safety is a collective effort. We hope that with these tips in mind, you are able to stay safe on the road and have an enjoyable time at your destination. Happy Spring Break!
