Each day, millions of children rely on school buses to transport them to and from school. For that reason, it is of high importance for parents, educators, and our communities to raise awareness for school bus safety. Help raise awareness of School Bus Safety during the week of October 16-20, 2023.

There are a few things to remember about school bus safety:

  • Stop for School Buses – When you see a school bus slowing down or stopping, stay alert of the surrounding areas. Children could be crossing the street or cars could be illegally passing the school bus.
  • Understand School Bus Lights – A yellow flashing light indicates the bus is about to stop. A red flashing light indicates the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off the bus.
  • Maintenance and Inspections – School districts should ensure their school bus fleets are having regular maintenance and inspections.

The iconic yellow school bus was designed so that they are highly visible and have several safety features including flashing lights, stop-sign arms, and protective seating. Did you know larger buses do not have seat belts because they have a unique technology called compartmentalization? Children on school buses are protected by strong, closely spaced seats that have energy-absorbing seat backs. Think of it like eggs in a carton.

Let’s work together to keep our children safe!
