Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer and is an opportunity for many to hit the road to various warm-weather destinations. When travel spikes, so do the opportunities for incidents. As we head into the Memorial Day travel period, keep the following safety tips in mind to stay safe during your local and long-distance travel.
Be sure to check your air conditioner before heading out on long journeys, as the risk of heatstroke, especially for children whose body temperature rises faster than an adult’s, is greatly increased in hot weather. Never, under any circumstances, leave a person or animal in the car unattended.
Additionally, check your coolant, fluid levels, batteries, lights, and wiper blades to ensure your car is ready for whatever weather comes your way while on the road.
It’s also advisable to check your tire pressure, including the spare tire, to ensure they are all at the manufacturer’s recommended level. Inspect your tires before a long journey—if the tread is uneven, they need to be replaced. Climate temperature changes cause changes in your tire pressure.
Finally, be aware of out-of-town drivers who may not be familiar with local roads and do research on local road conditions and laws if you are heading somewhere unfamiliar. More so with holidays, sometimes increased alcohol consumption occurs. Never drive while impaired and if you suspect someone is operating a vehicle under the influence, pull over if it is safe to do so, and call 911.
The best way to take full advantage of a relaxing vacation is to plan ahead to avoid any bumps in the road. Keep these tips in mind as we head into the travel period and enjoy wherever the holiday takes you!
