Labor Day is a celebration of the hard work Americans everywhere put in throughout the year and marks the end of summer for many, inspiring celebration across the country. Before you hit the road this Labor Day, be sure to consider the following safe driving tips to ensure you arrive at your destination safely.
Though summer is coming to a close, temperatures across Georgia remain high. Never leave any animal or person, especially a child, alone in the car—even with the windows down. Remember that a child’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult.
As for your vehicle, it’s crucial to check fluids, air conditioning, and belts throughout the summer, but especially before a road trip. Remember, too, that temperature affects tire pressure, so be sure to check your tire pressure at least a month before a long road trip. Learn more on the NHTSA’s Summer Driving Tips website page.
Lastly, we cannot discuss a holiday without mentioning alcohol consumption. In 2023, 36% of Labor Day weekend crashes involved a drunk driver. If you plan to consume alcohol over the holiday weekend, designate a sober driver or plan a ride share beforehand. If you notice any drivers on the road that seem to be alcohol or drug impaired, pull over if safe to do so and call 911. Road safety is a collective effort; do your part to ensure everyone arrives home safely.
Don’t let a preventable mishap derail your holiday plans. We hope these tips help you prepare for a safe Labor Day weekend, whether you’re staying near or traveling far. Happy Labor Day!
