The peak event of many Georgia residents’ summers is the Independence Day (Fourth of July) holiday weekend. Friends and family gather, and many folks head to distant destinations to fully relax into our national celebration. Wherever this weekend may take you, we want to encourage everyone to review some safe driving tips, especially those pertaining to alcohol consumption.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2023, 617 people died in traffic crashes during the Fourth of July holiday period and that 38% (233) of those fatalities occurred in drunk driving crashes. If you plan to consume alcohol during this holiday, remember to designate a sober driver beforehand and to intercept anyone attempting to operate a vehicle after drinking. Additionally, if you suspect that a driver on the road might be under the influence, pull over if safe to do so and call 911.

It is also crucial to keep in mind that buzzed driving is considered drunk driving. If you feel different, you drive differently.

Of all the things you can mix a drink with, it should never be with driving. We hope these tips encourage you to be vigilant about potential roadway danger during this holiday weekend. Remember, no amount of fun is worth your safety.
